RIISE2024

installation
raw clay, glass, water

<img width="6000" height="4000" width_o="6000" height_o="4000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/e6101082ed9b63e46f1ef34cb5fe42f940aeda19cda5138fa5ccde1bba2bb8b1/DSC_0023.JPG" data-mid="224141048" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/e6101082ed9b63e46f1ef34cb5fe42f940aeda19cda5138fa5ccde1bba2bb8b1/DSC_0023.JPG" />

Riise is a sculptural installation that transforms the agricultural landscape of Rovasenda - the municipality that commissioned the work - into a dynamic miniature ecosystem. Through the careful extraction and manipulation of native clay from local rice paddies, the artwork creates a dialectic between natural materials, agricultural practice, and living systems. The installation consists of two primary elements: the core is made of hand-formed clay cubes, each crafted from clay extracted from different rice paddies across Rovasenda's territory, then manipulated and polished by hand. The base is a glass foundation containing a shallow water layer, which serves both as a display platform and an active component of the piece.

 <img width="6000" height="4000" width_o="6000" height_o="4000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/1f8444d7b4059892213cf12cf9fbcd03b43341a86f3fbe485bf559ec10d93294/DSC_0014.JPG" data-mid="224141033" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/1f8444d7b4059892213cf12cf9fbcd03b43341a86f3fbe485bf559ec10d93294/DSC_0014.JPG" />

The work operates on multiple levels of meaning, from a geographical mapping system, where each clay form represents a specific location within Rovasenda's agricultural landscape to a meditation on the relationship between human agricultural practices and natural systems, becoming a living sculpture that evolves over time through its interaction with environmental factors. The combination of water, clay, and exposure to open air creates conditions that foster the development of a micro ecosystem, allow for natural processes of change and degradation and mirror the ecological dynamics of actual rice fields on a miniature scale.
Riise invites viewers to contemplate the complex relationships between human cultivation practices, natural materials, and living systems while offering a poetic interpretation of agricultural space.

Grammar is a visual set inspired by the early video-art experiment and rooted in the history of visual scores and concrete poetry. The work aims to maintain a similar attitude toward the exploration of synesthesia, and the use of a combination of shapes and colors that are the fundaments of the visual media language.

Dark matter is an audio-visual experiment based on the manipulation
of a number of images generated by different AIs, subsequently
articulated and filtered in response to the audio track. An exploration of
the idea of synesthesia of image-sound interactions.

The Cervo project room is an archive in progress and the first phase of the Osservatorio sul Torrente project, an interdisciplinary research platform that focuses on the river as a common and a central element of the social, political, cultural, and economic development of the Biellese area.Osservatorio sul torrente aims to collect and promote interdisciplinary research and in-depth studies that question the relationship between the inhabitants and the river, stimulate new participatory experiences that enhance the less considered or forgotten aspects of the territory, trigger the creation of other imaginaries, and build a new collective narrative of the relationship with the river. The archive collects fragments of materials, maps, notes, and documents available for free reading and consultation, inviting people to rethink the relationship with the Cervo river and by extension with the entire territory, through a reflection on ecology, the environment and the cohabitation of human and non-human.

Superposition

In quantum physics the superposition principle is the idea that a system is not fixed and unique, determined, but it is the set of all possible states of that system, superimposed, co-present. Deriving from Heisenberg's uncertainty principle, it proposes that the state of the system collapses into a single form -what we call reality- only after a measurement or interaction with another system.
When the human being interacts with the environment in which he lives, he builds his reality on the basis of that relationship, a relationship mediated largely by his cultural background of which science is part. The construction of reality is therefore mostly a cultural process, of knowledge shared by a community. In the reality of the Western world, an intrinsic dichotomy between nature and culture has developed over the course of history, arising from the emancipation of man from the context he inhabits. Man places himself above and outside the world that he tries to dominate. A system of thought whose consequences are now readable on a global scale, under the various nuances of the term anthropocene.Just as the scientist has the task of understanding reality, the physical mechanisms that construct the world and the laws that dominate nature, so the artist has the task - the power - to contribute to the reflection on the cultural construction of reality, of our relationship with the "things" of the world. Curator Nicolas Bourriaud defines the role of art in contemporary society as an exercise in mending and overcoming this dualism. Contemporary art now deals with animals, plants, minerals, machines and technology, reintegrating nature into culture and vice versa. The artist and the scientist, therefore, follow much more similar paths than it may seem, made of creativity and intuition and the need to give their elaborations an imaginative power able to generate thought, to build worlds, to relate people with the complexity of reality that they investigate, each in their own field. Both are confronted with the necessity of doing research, of re-observing reality, of reconsidering it, of proposing new forms. Reality -world- that as David Graeber reminds us is a participatory, intersubjective construct: "The ultimate and hidden truth of the world is that it is something we do, and that we could just as easily do differently".

This project room is an attempt to suspend ontology. A space of superimposition of countless realities. Suspending ontology means freeing the possibility of building new worlds and new thoughts, freeing external and alien points of view, defining a new relationship between human and non-human -human and "other" in the widest possible sense-. To negotiate a better balance between the various agents that inhabit, modify and define an environment. Like man and like the river.
At the center of the project room there is a research on the Cervo torrent, an element - or an entity - that has characterized the history of the Biella area at all levels, from those most intertwined with man -economy, sociology, habitability- to those less perceptible -geology, morphology of the territory, ecology-.

In this space are collected physical materials and research paths: stones, clay, wood, maps, notes, intuitions, impressions, correlations, historical documents and more in a sort of free-reading archive that would like to stimulate the generation of a link (or a different link) with the stream and by extension with the whole territory.

Entropy is a quantity that is interpreted as a measure of the disorder of a
system. At various levels tends to apply the simplification that a system is
naturally inclined to increase its entropy, meaning it is naturally inclined to
increase its degree of disorder. Another way to describe the concept of entropy is to say that energy
degrades, or moves from more usable forms to less usable forms. Most of the anthropic activities, tend to use energy -degrading- to fight
the general entropy of the universe, in an attempt to order things. An
unconsciously paradoxical action.
Unæntrhopic devices is a series of experiments that refer to this paradox in
an attempt to build objects-order matter, consume energy- to highlight the&nbsp;

anthropic effects that degrade reality and the ecosystem we inhabit. They
are therefore objects that express the illusory will to be un-entropic and
un-anthropic.

#1 Paradigm (glass cubes, fossil wood)

Paradigm consists of 5 glass cubes that isolate fossil wood of plants that
lived between 2 and 5 million years ago, a scale immeasurable compared
to the human one. They testify to the distance between reality and our
ability to understand, imagine, inhabit and represent it. Thomas Kuhn,
American philosopher, described the development of scientific progress
as a juxtaposition of irreconcilable models, called incommensurable
paradigms. Advancement proceeds by 5 successive stages in which one
theory emerges, encounters a crisis, and is then abandoned for a new one.
However, it is not necessarily the best or “truest” model that is chosen,
but the one that most captures the interest of scientists. The choice of
paradigm is therefore based on socio-psychological grounds.

Paradigm provides at the same time evidence of entities and events that
are not really understandable yet surround humans -such as a temporality
of millions of years- and an invitation to consider possible narratives of
reality that consider entities and metrics that differ from human ones.

#2 Undecaying pebbles (raw clay and pebbles)

Undecaying pebbles depicts a double impossibility. Pebbles are embedded
in a clay cover polished with the practice of Japanese dorodango. In natural geological evolution, stone eroded by the river and polished by
water continues its decay until becoming soil, sand or clay. The same clay
retrieved from the stream that is used here as a coating in an attempt
to preserve a pebble inside over time. The durability and effectiveness of
this operation -and therefore its possibility- is uncertain. Similarly, it is very
difficult to produce an intact dorodango that is not composed of clay alone.

#3 Fluctuation (baked clay, iron wire)

The matter we usually see and touch is not as solid as it appears to us.
At the microscopic level, below the atom, quantum physics tells of a foam,
a discontinuous structure of space-time formed by micro-regions in
continuous evolution dictated by quantum fluctuations, the geons. From
these fluctuations structures emerge that combine forming the matter that
we perceive as solid.Fluctuation relates the fluctuating nature of matter with
the constant movement of the stream, solidifying strings of clay taken from
the same stream of which the clay is a mixture of the most minute particles
(water and phyllosilicate minerals).

In the popular legends of the Italian Alps Valley, the lüria is the personification
of a malicious spirit, or a fantastic animal, which lures into the whirlpools of a
flooding torrent those who get too close and stare at the swirling waters. It
was a warning, especially to children, to keep them away from the agitated
waters during the floods. In past centuries, most of these torrents - including
the Cervo, focus of the research, were inhabited by otters, which made their
nests among the stones and on the banks of the river. They were considered
dirty and nasty animals, often associated with evil female figures and
prostitutes, and were hunted down and killed by otter hunters.

This video is a reinterpretation of the figure of the Luria, a hybrid figure
between the mineral, vegetable, animal and human kingdoms, who inhabits
the river environment and personifies the river flood, the turbid and agitated
water that drags with it and changes the territory during the storms.
Overturning the negative connotation of the river flood phenomenon, this
work draws on popular mythology to explore a vision of the river as an agent
in an ever-changing territory.

“Periodically the river overflows in these spaces. ’Flooding’ is the word they
use, but in truth it’s not an overflow, it’s a remembering. Remembering where
it used to be. Every waterway has a perfect memory and always tries to get back to where it was.”Toni Morrison, The Site of Memory, 1998

HOTEL BAIKONUR2020

30’ radio podcasts series, italian
voice by Michele Poletti

	<img width="1080" height="1080" width_o="1080" height_o="1080" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/5dda1e5eb6ed0df896ca345458f879a05bd18c4c0123f2caae65fd2c009e6058/hb-logo.jpg" data-mid="79245967" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/5dda1e5eb6ed0df896ca345458f879a05bd18c4c0123f2caae65fd2c009e6058/hb-logo.jpg" />

Hotel Baikonur is an attempt at speculative narration, with the aim of re-mediating storytelling, introducing creativity in the scientific field as a key factor in promoting its dissemination.

The presence in the contemporary society of social media, the increasingly close intertwining of real and virtual, has cracked the individual's critical ability, the selectivity of seeking information, in many cases overturning the mechanisms of reading reality and trust towards the stories of everyday life. The strong imprint of marketing on storytelling has shifted the forms of narration from facts to post-truth. A model in which adherence to reality no longer matters as much as the impact, the involvement of the fan at any cost, and therefore the glitters and the package. In the shadows, having suffered this imbalance, lies all the fields in which adherence to reality is not only ethical but is necessary to avoid the collapse of a shared value system. Science, history, art, culture, in general, have remained in an unstable balance between strictly technical dissemination, and audience development, the need to transform users into fans, and consequently into customers, and then fall, except in rare cases. The monsters of the sleep of reason have been generated. The liberalization of social media opinions has given way to all sorts of claiming conspiracies, to any kind of self-referential story that avenges the discomfort of not fully understanding reality to the point of building a new, incorrect, aberrated but satisfying one. After all, storytelling is a biological function.

Hotel Baikonur deliberately creates a parallel between storytelling and speculative fiction, which share the ability -which is the ability of literature- to generate plausible but not real worlds and make them understandable. Science fiction can build events based on unreal or implausible -yet understandable- laws and scientific models. The artistic process of this work is based on the logical inversion in which sci-fi becomes the key to illustrating real news, discoveries, and scientific systems, making them (more) understandable through the narrative device, resetting the truth, the marvel, the importance of deep research in any field.

“Hotel Baikonur is an interplanetary broadcast in a precarious balance between science, science fiction, and speculative fiction. The things you will hear are true or imagined. There are real things on the edge of the incredible, and things imagined on the edge of reality. Many of the things you will hear will be a mixture of real and imaginary, past, present and future. And a lot of the things you will hear will be music.”

SAARV2019

audio-video installation
live performance

in collaboration with Annalisa Zegna sound by Kreggo

commissioned by Fondazione Pistoletto, produced by Hydro for Arte al Centro 2019

Saarv is a video and sound installation that creates a liquid and immersive environment in which to experience the potential of water, within a process of generation and destruction of form. The flow of images shows the creation of landscapes from small elements taken from the environment, through the enlargement and amplification of details subjected to the metamorphic action of water.

The installation is part of a larger project related to water resources, environmental issues, and climate change. Specifically, the research was developed around the Cervo Torrent, Saarv in the Piedmontese dialect, a stream that runs through the city of Biella and that has shaped its territory over the centuries from a morphological, geographical, cultural and economic point ofview. The choice to focus the research on the torrent comes from a personal interest of the artists concerning the transformations of the Biellese context, the industrial events and the social developments of its recent history.

The project is based on a research methodology that goes through various phases. Starting from the direct exploration of the specific area, it elaborates a poetic and imaginative representation of the territory itself, anchored to reality but directed towards possible speculative narratives. The artistic intention is to transform real and concrete data into new imaginaries, alternative worlds, and potential futures.

“At the beginning of the third millennium, the planet finds a new
balance following the continuous environmental and climatic transformations. Living beings are adapting to the present conditions.Humanity is implementing strategies to combat water shortages. In particular, a new sector of science is concerned with developing ecosystems suited to life also through the recreation of river environments and now extinct river basins. The research is based on the study of natural elements collected and preserved through freezing in protected specific archives. The different samples permit to construct hypotheses on the original morphology and course of the rivers. The materials are analyzed through experimentation in a liquid and controlled environment.”
